Partial dentures are removable dentures that replace only a few teeth instead of the entire arch. The partial dentures are secured in place by a metal framework OR acrylic (plastic) base that matches the color of your gums. Like dental bridges, partial dentures fill in the gaps left by missing teeth to restore the appearance and function of your smile.
When you’re missing teeth, the surrounding teeth may begin to move into the open space. This can impact your bite, leave you susceptible to periodontal disease, and lead to bone loss that can ultimately change your appearance. Partial dentures can restore the look and feel of your teeth, giving you a natural-looking smile that feels normal.
Getting partial dentures requires multiple visits. During your first appointment, Dr. Nguyen will take impressions of your teeth to make sure that your partial dentures fit appropriately and work with your bite.
After your custom denture is finished, Dr. Nguyen will make sure it fits properly. While you don’t have to wear your dentures all day if you don’t want to, we encourage you to wear them as often as possible at first to make sure that we identify pressure points or areas of discomfort.
Like with complete dentures, you will go through an adjustment period. Your partials may feel awkward and bulky at first, but this feeling will go away as you get used to wearing them.
While you’re adjusting to your partial dentures, we recommend starting out eating soft foods and taking small bites until eating feels natural. If you’re struggling or feeling awkward speaking, practice talking to yourself or reading aloud until you adjust.
We don’t advise that you sleep in your partial dentures. Additionally, you will need to clean them regularly and soak them so that they retain their shape–while you’re asleep is the perfect time to do this. If you have any denture care questions, don’t hesitate to call our office and ask!
